Problems with accessing one particular website

This guide will show you how to fix the problem of not being able to access one particular website, while you are still able to access others.

Step 1: Restart the computer. (This commonly will fix most problems) If this doesn’t fix it proceed to step 2.

Step 2: If others are having the same problem as you then turn off the modem, turn on the modem again. If they are not having the same problem then ignore this step and proceed to step 3

Step3: Clear the Internet cookies and browser cache. If this doesn’t work proceed to the next step.

Step 4: Temporarily disable your computer’s firewall and temporarily disable any anti-virus software that may be running in the background. If you are now able to access the websites that were previously not loading, your security program is causing the problem.

Step 5: (Advanced users) Open your hosts file and see if there are any entries for sites that are currently unreachable from your computer. The hosts file is located in the following folder:

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Step 6: Under the start menu select run. (Windows 8 users open start menu, type run and click enter) Then type “cmd” Enter the following commands to atempt to reset the Run the ping and traceroute commands against the problematic site to make sure that it is not an ISP specific issue using the following commands.

ipconfig /flushdns

tracert www.problematic-website.com

ping www.problematic-website.com

If the DNS server is an issue, you can easily switch to Google DNS or OpenDNS without having to call the ISP’s support. However, if the ping and traceroute connections are successful but the sites remain unreachable, proceed to the next step.

Step 7: Reset the modem to factory defaults and re-configure it with the same username and password that was provided by the ISP (remember to back up all settings before you perform a reset, and in some cases contact your Web Hosting Provider to check if this is the correct move to take). You can reset the modem by pressing a pin inside the hole located at the back of the modem for about 10 seconds. Or you can call your Web Hosting support and let them guide you through the steps over phone.

Step 8: Contact the website via email for more information if this website is still causing a problem as it could be that your ip address has been blocked by the host website.
