Transferring your hosting over to us

Transferring your hosting over to us

When you need to transfer your hosting to us, it is not just updating the name server records at your domain registrar but there are several things you need to do before updating these records.

If your current provider can provide you with your cPanel login details, we can then do a transfer “as is” over to our servers. To do this, please ask your current provider for the following:

  • cPanel Username
  • cPanel Password

The above information will help us to migrate you over to our platform very quickly. If you don’t have access to your cPanel account, you would need to do the following:

  1. Download a copy of all contents from your old hosting provider’s FTP server. Sometimes it is easier to compress these files into a zip file and downloading the contents as one zip package then hundreds or thousands of files. This can be the quickest way but, you will also need to make sure you have enough space on your old web server to do this.

  2. Make sure you are collecting your email via POP3 and not IMAP. If you are using IMAP, your email is stored on your current server and will not be transferred over. The easiest way is to do this is to open your emails in outlook and export the file as a pst file.

  3. Perth Web Hosting can help you at an additional fee to do this depending on how big your mailbox is and how many mailboxes there are.

  4. Download the SQL/MYSQL database file. If you are running a content management system (CMS) such as Joomla, WordPress or other software to manage your website, your site will have a database and will need to be downloaded.

  5. If you would like us to assist you in the transfer, we will need the following information:

  • FTP Username and Password
  • Control Panel (Plesk or Cpanel) access details
  • IP Address / Domain name
  • Domain Register details (Where the domain was purchased from)
  • Domain Name
  • Domain EPP/Authinfo (if you wish to transfer the domain to us)

A minimum charge of $79 + GST  will be charged for the transfer depending on how big and complex the site is and if there is more than one domain to be transferred. We do recommend our clients let us do the work so everything is rolled over correctly with as little downtime as possible.

The plan of action in transferring your website over with minimal downtime

  1. We get all access to the server and copy everything over to our servers.

  2. At this point if the client has an CMS, we ask them to hold off updating their website as any updates may not be transferred over. If this is an issue, there can be a delay in updating the content on the new server.

  3. If we have access to the current DNS zone records, we, update the DNS records at the domain register too point to our servers and point the www and mail servers too your old servers and change the TTL value to 300 (5 minutes) ON your old SERVER. Then we wait for 4 hours for the change to propagate around the world. Once we confirm that this change has been confirmed, we then finally update the IP address on the A record.

Most times, we do not see your site going down or your mail being disrupted. Sometimes we recommend restarting your modem and pc to clear the DNS that sometimes can be cached in your system.

If you have any questions in us transferring the site over, please contact us and we are happy to assist you.
