Under auDA policy all .com.au and .net.au domains must have an active ABN or ACN number with the Australian Business Register. If your ABN expires, or the business changes hands a Change of Registrant is required to ensure the ABN details remain valid.
To update this, we require a letter on your old company’s letterhead to advise that the business has changed hands. This letter must be back dated to before the ABN was cancelled. If you are unsure when it was cancelled, you can look this up using the following link: https://abr.business.gov.au/
Please ensure the letter includes the following, otherwise it may be rejected by auDA.
- The letter must feature the old company’s letterhead.
- The letter must include the old company’s address and ABN/ACN.
- The letter must be signed with the old company’s directors name, and company name.
- The letter must be back dated to before the old owners ABN/ACN was cancelled.
- The letter must confirm that the domain name was transferred from the old company to the new company. Note, even if the company hasn’t changed, a change of ABN details counts as a seperate business entity. In this case you can use the same company name, but note the different ABN/ACN.
- All domains that require a change of registrant should be listed on the letter. If a domain is not listed, the letter cannot be used as evidence for that domain.
- The letter must be signed by the old owner.
Example of a valid document
Below is an example of how the letter should look.
In the example below, a domain has changed hands from the old owner Bobs Builders to the new owner Robs Construction from the 2nd of January 2025.
Please note that the example below the letter is back dated to the 1st of January 2025.
The red X denotes where the old owner’s signature should be.
