We also recommend that you take a backup copy of your database and files before updating WordPress. By backing up your database and files you can easily restore them in the event that your website or plugins are incompatible with the latest version of WordPress.
This is particularly important if you have missed incremental WordPress updates. e.g. If you are updating from a very old version of WordPress directly to the latest version.
Once you have logged into the WordPress, click on the Dashboard option on the left hand menu. You will see a screen similar to the screenshot below.
To run the update, click on Please update now or click on Updates on the left hand menu below Dashboard

You should now be presented with a screen similar to the screenshot below.
Once you are ready to update, select Update to version X.X.X (At the time of writing this article the current latest version of WordPress is 6.3.1)
Your WordPress updates will now begin, Note that your website will enter Maintenance Mode while the update is running.
While in Maintenance Mode you will not be able to access your website or use WordPress.
Once the update has completed your website will be taken out of maintenance mode and will be accessible again.
Once the update has finished running you will usually be prompted to update your WordPress database. Click Update WordPress Database to run this update.
Once the Database update has completed, you should be presented with the screen below.
Congratulations you have successfully updated your WordPress version.
At this point you should open your website in an incognito browser window and compare the website to how it looked before running the update.
You should also check how the website appears when viewed by mobiles or tablet devices by using the responsive mode tool.
If you have updates available for your plugins or themes, you should update these now too.
